“Opti” – The Optimist Dinghy

The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by children up to the age of 15. The boat is 7’ 9” long with a 3’ 8” beam.

It is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world with over 150,000 boats officially registered in the class and many more built but never registered. The Optimist dinghy is the core vessel used by Bow To Stern Boating for its sailing training with young (14 and under) sailors.

The single sail of the Optimist is sprit-rigged. The Optimist has a pram hull, making it easy to sail the smaller boats.

The Sunfish sailboat is often credited as the boat that taught America to sail. Sold since the early 1950s, the Sunfish is a personal size (13’ 9”) sailing dinghy, carrying a lateen sail mounted to an un-stayed mast.

Having a lateen sail with its simple two line rigging makes a Sunfish simple to learn sailing on and to set up. Upgrades can be added to enhance sail control for competitive sailing, making the boat attractive to both novice and experienced sailors alike.

Due to the broad appeal of the Sunfish, in 1995 it was commended by The American Sailboat Hall of Fame for being “the most popular fiberglass boat ever designed, with a quarter million sold worldwide” (at that point in time).

The FJ, or Flying Junior, is a fast little sailing dinghy. These boats were originally designed for training Olympic sailors. At 13’ 3” long, the FJ has a beam of 4’11” and an overall sail area of 100 square feet. These dimensions make the FJ an ideal class to teach young sailors the skills of boat handling and racing.
